Standing at this cabinet

The Ms. Pac-Man Handheld Mini Arcade Game is a retro arcade machine for the home: a Handheld Series pocket arcade, 6 in tall, with a 2.5 in screen, and one player at the stick.

Ms. Pac-Man is not a reskin and we did not build it like one. Four mazes rotate instead of one, the fruit bounces through the tunnels on its own path, and the ghosts break pattern early — so the memorised Pac-Man routes get you eaten. Players who had the original maze memorised find this one hard again, which is the point.

Full colour screen, microswitch joystick, original music cue when the intermission plays. Three AA batteries come in the box, so the first maze starts before you get home.

What we built in

  • Ms. Pac-Man on her own arcade board: four rotating mazes and bouncing fruit, not a Pac-Man reskin.
  • Ghosts that break pattern, so memorised routes stop working and the game stays hard.
  • Bright full colour screen with the dots and power pellets easy to pick out.
  • Three AA batteries fitted in the box — the first game starts in the car.

The sequel, not a reskin, on a retro arcade machine for the home

People assume Ms. Pac-Man is Pac-Man with a bow on it. It is not. There are four mazes instead of one, the fruit moves through the tunnels instead of sitting still, and the ghost behaviour has a random element that breaks pattern play entirely. That last change is why the 1982 board is the harder game and why this 6-inch cabinet is the one we recommend to someone who already knows the original maze by heart.

Four mazes and a thumb on a real stick

The mazes rotate as you clear them, so the muscle memory that carries you through Pac-Man is no help by the third screen. A microswitch joystick is what makes that playable: the gate timing is tight and a glass swipe cannot hit it. The buttons and stick click audibly, the speaker gives you the original siren, and the whole machine runs on three AA cells that come in the box behind a screwed door.

Size, screen and where it ends up

Six inches of cabinet, a 2.5-inch colour panel and a deep matte bezel so daylight does not wash the maze out. It is a compact machine with a marquee and a moulded coin door, built to the proportions of a full-height cabinet rather than flattened into a slab. In practice it ends up in a bag, and it is the handheld most often bought alongside the Pac-Man one so two people can play different mazes side by side.

Who this mini arcade game is for

Ms. Pac-Man is the harder game of the pair — four mazes instead of one, fruit that moves, ghosts with less predictable patterns — and this is six inches of arcade cabinet built around it, with a real joystick and an official licensed board. Three AA cells, no plug, no coin-operation, no account: it is ready to play out of the box and it goes in a bag. The construction is a compact miniature of our full size cabinets rather than a plastic pad, so the stick clicks into its gate and the buttons feel like arcade buttons. For a player whose memory of the original is a cocktail table in a pizza place, the nostalgia is immediate. For anyone who has only played the first Pac-Man, this is the edition that will actually beat you, and the endless free turns are the only reason you will get anywhere.

How it fits across our collection

Our collection is one arcade cabinet in four heights. This is the smallest. Above it, the 16-inch Counter Series is a tabletop machine designed for home bars and desks; the 37.5-inch Junior Series is a free standing build for a child's room, with Ms. Pac-Man on the board alongside Pac-Man, Galaga and Dig Dug; and the 61-inch Ultra Series is a full size floor cabinet for a dedicated game room. Same family business, same licensed boards, same durable premium parts, no custom work and no pinball. If you are combining machines in one room, mix the controls rather than the cabinets — a stick, a trackball and a spinner give three kinds of action, and that variety is what turns a shelf of machines into something that feels like an arcade.
